Update: Disney is still on track for total world domination. They have cornered the market on toddlers and young children with their acquisition of Pixar, not to mention everyone else who loves their films. They have the male market (and again, everyone else who loves their films) locked down with their ownership of Marvel Studios. Disney has always been strong in the young female demographic, with their long history of making musical animated features. This tradition held true with their smash hit Frozen last year as well. So it seems Disney wants to now mine an older female audience, older viewers who remember the classic animated feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs fondly. They banked on this same type of nostalgia last year with their prequel to the Wizard of Oz, Oz the Great and Powerful, which worked out financially for the studio. Their newest effort is Maleficient, a twist on perspective on the classic Snow White fable. This post-modern retelling will give the origin story of the evil witch… that we have always been waiting for… That some of us have been waiting for…That you are waiting for? It seems a little out of left field, but taking account of such hits as Wicked and Snow White and the Huntsman, in popular culture and it starts to make a lot more sense. Plus it stars Angelina Jolie…boom.
Maleficent will be in theaters May 30th, 2014. It stars Angelina Jolie (Girl, Interrupted), Elle Fanning (Super 8) and Sharlto Copley (District 9). Special effects veteran, Robert Stromberg, will be making his directorial debut with Linda Woolverton handling the scripting duties.
